According to global statistics, mortality from cardiovascular causes (myocardial infarction, stroke, etc.) is the absolute leader among all causes of death annually.

According to the WHO, cardiovascular diseases take about 20 million lives annually, remaining the leading cause of death globally.

In 2022, about 19.8 million people died from cardiovascular diseases, representing about 32% of all global deaths.

According to WHO data, every third death in the world is caused by cardiovascular diseases.

Cardiovascular mortality can be prevented in many cases by managing risk factors.

Manageable risk factors include tobacco use, alcohol and salt abuse, unhealthy diet, sedentary lifestyle, excess weight, as well as accompanying diseases such as arterial hypertension and diabetes mellitus.

The UHI package includes screening examinations for the early detection of cardiovascular diseases and diabetes mellitus. The program is intended for individuals aged 18 to 75, with a periodicity of once every two years.

The screening examination is performed by a family physician at the primary healthcare level. It consists of 2 stages: in the first stage, the individual fills out a questionnaire, their anthropometric data (weight, height) are recorded, and blood pressure is measured by a healthcare worker. Depending on the results of the first stage, additional tests may be performed if necessary, such as determining glucose and total cholesterol (with fractions) in venous blood. Patients identified as a high-risk group are then referred for specialized medical care. In the absence of risk factors, the individual participates in the screening again after two years.

The screening program is expected to help reduce severe cardiovascular diseases that pose a direct threat to life and can lead to disability, through the implementation of preventive healthcare measures.

This page applies the questionnaire thresholds: for cardiovascular risk, additional testing is suggested at a score of 5 or higher, and for diabetes, at 12 or higher.

Implementation of the Examination

The preventive visit screening includes:

Filling out a questionnaire to identify healthy lifestyle and risk factors
Determination of body mass index and measurement of waist circumference
Blood pressure measurement

If a patient scores 6 or more points on the cardiovascular risk assessment scale during the visit, they are identified as a risk group, resulting in a referral for additional testing to determine low-density lipoprotein (LDL) in the blood.

If a patient scores 15 or more points on the diabetes risk assessment scale, they are identified as a risk group, resulting in a referral for additional testing to determine venous blood glucose.

In the case of a diagnosis of arterial hypertension and diabetes mellitus, disease management is carried out according to the protocols approved by the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Armenia.
